The Institute of Social Sciences has been celebrating April 24- as Women's Political Empowerment Day since 1994. The 17th year celebrations of the Women's Political Empowerment Day will take place on 24-25 April 2010. The theme of this year's celebration is `To End Violence against Women and the Role of Local Government '. On this occasion, the Institute gives awards to outstanding women panchayat leaders for their valuable contribution in the field of panchayati raj. Some of the themes of Women’s Political Empowerment day celebrations in the recent past were: Panchayats, Water and Sanitation; Panchayats and Women’s Economic Empowerment; Gram Sabha and Women; HIV and AIDS, Women and Role of Panchayats, Climate Change, Women and Role of Panchayats etc. Discussions on the issues relating to general and domestic violence will take place between Elected Women Representatives and feminists. Legal aspects pertaining to CEDAW (Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women) and Domestic Violence Act- 2005 are also on agenda of the two day conference along with video shows, poster exhibitions.
