Eastern Regional Centre, Kolkata, West Bengal
The Eastern Regional Centre (ERC) of the Institute was started in January 2001 in Kolkata. Ms. Archana Ghosh and Mr. B.D. Ghosh, senior faculty members of the Institute, along with Ms. Madhulika Mitra, a researcher, and with an administrative staff started the Eastern Regional Centre in the premises of the Council for Social Development in South Kolkata. A major international seminar on Urban Environment Management, Local Government and Community Action was organized from this premise by the minimum staff of the ERC with local support from the Council and help from the New Delhi office. In December 2001, ERC shifted to its own premises in a rented accommodation in Salt Lake, Kolkata. This was possible with the help of UNICEF, Kolkata which allowed us to rent office space under a project funded by them. Since its inception, Kolkata centre conducted several research studies based on extensive field work and household survey. Some of the research studies are locally generated and some are part of major studies conducted by the New Delhi office. Because of the reputation gained by the ERC in a short period of time, the State Government Departments, Municipal Corporations, international funding agencies like UNICEF, UNDP, DFID, World Bank and others approached ERC directly for conducting important studies for them. Further, the ERC got several projects through bidding process as well. The ERC also conducted international and regional conferences and project related dissemination workshops at regular interval in Kolkata.

The Senior Faculty members of ERC, facilitate and guide university research students from India and abroad. In 2005 Mr. B.D. Ghosh and Ms. Archana Ghosh guided the research studies conducted by five research students on various social issues in West Bengal supported by the UNICEF Internship Programme. In 2010, Ms. Archana Ghosh guided Ms. Corinna Li, a graduate student of Yale University, US on her summer internship programme in ERC on Healthcare and Education Services in Kolkata Slums. The senior faculty members deliver regular lectures on rural and urban governance in the institutes like Administrative Training Institute, State Institute of Panchayat and Rural Development, Institute of Local Government and Urban Studies. Ms. Madhulika Mitra has delivered lectures on Case Studies on Human Trafficking in training course on Anti-Human Trafficking conducted by the Central Detective Training School in Kolkata. In addition to these, ERC faculty members have periodically published a number of books and research articles in reputed journals.

Ms. Archana Ghosh, currently the head of Urban Studies, coordinates the activities of the Eastern Regional Centre.
