INDIAN SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY
www.insoso.org

Established in 1951, the Indian Sociological Society (ISS) is the largest single professional association of sociologists catering to the needs of teaching and research in University departments and research institutes, as well as governmental and non-governmental institutions all over the country.

All these years it has been functioning from various prestigious social science institutions and university departments, such as Indian Statistical Institute, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bombay University, Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Pune University. The ISS was shifted to the Institute of Social Sciences in 1989.

Over the years it grew into a large association having around 2,500 Members distributed all over India and in 22 other countries. It has an elected Managing Committee consisting of 17 Members including the President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Besides conducting the prestigious M N Srinivas Memorial Lectures and giving M N Srinivas Memorial prize for Young Sociologists every year, publishing Sociological Bulletin, an internationally acclaimed tri-annual journal, which has been meeting the needs of  higher education in India and providing for the specialists and non-specialists scholarly data and analysis on Indian society and issues that confront it, publishing the ISS Newsletter and annually conducting All-India Sociological Conferences (AISCs) are the major activities of the Society.

The Society has so far organised 32 All India Sociological Conferences in various parts of the country — from Jammu to Trivandrum and from Shillong to Udaipur --  deliberating upon various contemporary social issues.

Following the practice in International Sociological Association, the ISS adopted the Research Committee system in 1998 to encourage more focused and meaningful discussions. There are 21 such Research Committees and the ISS Members can choose to join up to three of them.

With the publication of Sociological Bulletin and ISS Newsletter, holding annual conferences and encouraging young sociologists through Research Committees and award of M. N. Srinivas Memorial Prize, the Indian Sociological Society is playing a critical role in developing and strengthening the profession of sociology in India.

The Society instituted the Life Time Achievement Award in 2005 with the following objectives:  (a) To honour outstanding Indian Sociologists who have made profound and exceptional contributions in the field of sociology and thereby enriched the discipline of sociology and enhanced the capability and respectability of its professionals, and (b) To inspire and encourage other members of the profession to emulate these Awardees and consider them as role models and to work for their own and the profession’s betterment and  exaltation through creditable work and significant contribution. The award was given to Dr. Y B Damle (Pune), Prof M. S. Gore (Hubli), Prof. Victor S.  D'Souza (Bangalore), and Prof. Ramkrishna Mukherjee (Kolkata) in 2005. Prof. Yogendra Singh (New Delhi) and Prof. Leela Dube (New Delhi) were given the Life Time Achievement Award in 2007.

Professor Uttam B. Bhoite (Pune) is the President, Professor Ishwar Prasad Modi (Jaipir) is the Secretary and Dr. Ravinder Kaur (New Delhi) is the Treasurer of the Indin Sociological Society for the period 2008-2009. Prof. N. Jayaram (Bangalore) is the Managing Editor of Sociological Bulletin and Prof. Jacob John Kattakayam (Thiruvananthapuram) is the Editor of ISS Newsletter. Mr. Krishnan Namboodiri is the office in-charge, who may be contacted for all enquiries about the Indian Sociological Society.
